Room 3’s Living Eggs!
Day 1: The eggs arrived! Our Living Eggs Person (named Jo) brought in our incubator, hatchling pen, food, food dish, water dish, wood shavings, poster sand more. We were very excited. She said that chicks take about 21 days to hatch so she had sped the process up and kept the chicks at her house for 19 days. Jo said that the heat of a mother hen was around 37.7 degrees, so we set the incubator to 37.7 degrees. She said that the chicks should start chipping the egg to get out on day 2. A couple of the eggs rolled around a bit. Jo gave us a lightbulb to put in the hatchling pen so that the chicks wouldn’t be too warm or too cold. We found out that if the chicks were in the pen huddled up around the lightbulb they were too cold, so put a towel over the top of the pen. If they were crowding around the other side, as far away as they could from the light, they were hot, so switch the light off for a bit. If they were spread around the pen evenly, they were the right temperature.
Day 2: The middle egg started to crack, it made a small chip in the shell. From the crack in the egg we could tell that the egg (chick) was in the stage of ‘piping’. We were all very excited! From the crack we could see a little a little flap that was moving because the chick was breathing! The other eggs didn’t have any cracks in them unfortunately, but they did keep rolling around and vibrating. After morning tea, some people could even hear the chick with the cracked shell chirping a bit!
Day 3: When we came in in the morning we got a big surprise! Four of the eggs had hatched! Lots of visitors from other rooms all came to see the eggs, at first there weren’t a lot of visitors, but then there were a lot of visitors. In fact about 6 whole classes came to visit our chicks! Wow, they must be really popular! Each time a class came, our ‘Egg - Bassadors’ talked to the classes and told them facts. First we had a lot of Junior classes then we had some senior classes. For the first two classes, they got a special treat, they got to see a chick hatching! After doing cross country, we found out that the newborn chick had a bit of eggshell stuck to it’s tail! Luckily, it got taken off. We now have 6 chickens in our big blue box!
Day 4: Two eggs that were in the incubator yesterday still didn’t hatch today. When we came in the morning we were all very disappointed that the two eggs didn’t hatch. But, at least the other eggs had hatched. We also gave the 8 chicks that had hatched names. They were called:  Sugar - Plum, Becca, Linda, Pecky, Chicky, Egg, (girls) T.J.L and Sir Eggmund Hillary (boys). The chicks also started to eat a lot more and drink a lot more.

Emotions Poem

If Happiness was a color,
It would be bright yellow.
As golden as a crown.
If Happiness was a taste,
It would be just like a double decker chocolate cake.
If Happiness was a feeling,
It would be as lovely as a birthday wish.
If Happiness was a smell,
It would be as yummy as a warm pot of soup.
If Happiness was a sound,
It would be as cheerful as a 5 year old's squeals.

The Great Distraction to Sunnyhills
“Peck, peck.” “ Peck, peck.” I make these sounds as I first come out of my egg. I push the shell and peck at it. I hear loud sounds outside that seem like wailing sirens to me. I pear outside of my shell and see big faces staring at me and talking in excited shouts. “ Look! That one is pipping!” cries an excited shout. “ You’re right!” shrieks another one. “ Hey come over here, look that one is cracking!” shouts another one. I quickly back up into my egg and wait for the giants to go away.

For the rest of the day I stay in my shell and stay put. At around 2:35pm the giants take all my brothers and sisters into plastic boxes. As they lift me out I whine and retreat back into my shell. As soon as I am out I feel a sudden chill of wind down my back, my whole egg is cold now, I curl up and wait for this nightmare to end.

When I wake up I start pecking and find that the world is dark outside. I peer outside and find that there are no more giants outside. So I start work and I peck at the shell. More and more bits of eggshell fall off. Finally, after many hours of hard work, I make it out and see the outside world for the first time. When the giants come back again they shout and shout and shout. I’m so scared that I jump on top of my brothers and sisters that have hatched as well.

Then a big giant bigger than all the rest, tells two giants to do something. One giant does something and my home feels cold all of a sudden. Then another one takes my roof away and picks up one of my sisters! The giant reaches for me but I dodge and she doesn't get me.Then a big male giant comes over and reaches for me but I still am able to dodge him. The first giant says something to the second one and she reaches for me and grabs me. I get transported to a big blue box.

When I am in the big blue box I notice it is boiling hot so I press myself against the other side of the box. I notice that it is a big light that is giving off the heat, I just hope someone can turn it off. On giant argues that the light should be turned off, another one argues that it should be kept on.

Luckily, the one arguing to turn it off wins the argument and we stay cool. Then they turn it on again and we all have a little snooze.

When I wake up, I see a lot of giants they are very noisy. They keep talking and shouting and some even tap at the glass. My sisters are all scattered around the place panicking. Then even more excited shouts arise from the crowd because one of my brothers is hatching. I don’t really find what’s so amazing about my brother hatching, like, seriously, I don’t even think it is that interesting, just a bit gross.

In the afternoon more and more people arrive, in fact, some people even arrive twice! I finally notice that me and my sisters and brothers are a great distraction to this school, Sunnyhills.

Joshua and Trent's chicken presentation

A presentation made about chickens for our buddy class

A presentation made for our buddies
 Life as a chicken
I am a chicken
I wonder what the world will be like
I hear children yelling and telling everyone
    to be quiet
I see big bulky eyes watching me from
I want to run around and be free
       I am a chicken

I pretend to act like I am not there
I feel a little scared when everyone is watching me
I touch the class
I worry at night they there is no one there to help us
I cry when my brothers and sister leave me
I am a chicken

Lewis' Diary Entries

31/08/15

Dear Diary,

We got ten chickens today from a lady called Jo. She works for a company called Living Eggs. She talked to us all about the genders and the 21 day hatching process. The white ones are the male chickens and the brown ones are the female chickens. We got our ten chickens on the 19th day. We were told that they would hatch in about two days. We got extra morning tea time because she took so long telling us about them (No Offence). We actually got like 5 extra minutes including the real twenty minutes of morning tea.  Sep 2, 2015 10:36:33 AM.jpg

Yee-haa they hatched !!! Four chicks. One boy that I will call Alexis Sanchez. The first girl I will call Santi Cazorla because she has a mohawk and Santi Cazorla has one too. The Second I will call Sandy Saw-Dust because she is always pecking the Saw Dust and the last girl I will call Mesut Ozil. She has weird eyes like Ozil.

Another One! I’m going to take a photo. There we go. I’m not sure if its a boy or a girl but it is very tired so I’ll name it tomorrow. WIN_20150902_095601.JPG

We have Room 21 in here looking at the chickens and the eggs in here and again another one hatched !!! I will be naming it like the other one tomorrow anyway, I need to go to the interschool gymnastics competition so we will see what tomorrow brings. We have four more chickens to go...

Dear Diary,Sep 4, 2015 9:13:52 AM.jpg

We have two chicks that hatched so the brooder box looks like this

okay naming: Girl, Sped because she runs a lot, Boy, Sir Eggmont Hillary, girl, Becca, girl,Brooklyn. So yeah we only have two more eggs left, and they haven't even started pipping yet! So they might not hatch.
